Wow! that was quite a huge amount! and they got it at the age of 27? double wow! I'm 27, too...and my husband's 28 but our savings are way behind the savings of that couple. They are such an inspiration...hmmm I think we have to cut back our clothes and travel budgets right now.

Sorry, even though he didn't have to pay sales tax when he bought the ring in Oregon, he most definitely owes use tax to his resident state of California.

They could be doing a lot worse I guess. But still, they're living cheap renting because his parents are allowing them to rent a fully furnished place for an unheard of monthly rent in the bay area. Is that at all realistic?

I guess negative cash flow of 9k a year isn't that bad, but 3 properties seem like a lot. They're from the Bay Area I guess. We do make a lot of money here, but a lot goes to taxes and living expenses. My hubby and I make around the same amount as them, but we don't own any real estate so we don't have any tax deductions from the interest.

I think they are doing just fine and correctly. Wish I had the same opportunities. And that's a key factor here and in other similar stories.

There are some factors in life that come at you from out of nowhere that can really slam your prospects to the ground no matter how frugal or contemplative you are. You may still end up well off but will take longer and perhaps not as well as if those events didn't befall you.

Here is what I think about the Rodriguez family. Except for being frugal, their financial plan is awful and they are arrogant. "We don't want to sell low." WTF? Have you ever heard of getting out of a bad investment? "We want to keep our rental properties (and their negative cash flow) because they aren't part of our retirement plan." What plan are they part of? The slowly erode my cash flow plan? The I don't care about return on equity plan? These folks could be in a lot better place if they understood what they were doing.

Nice story. I think they sort of missed the point with the advice about getting out of company stock. The point is not to sell now, just be moving yourself towards a more balanced position. At the same time, I do think their in good shape with Microsoft. But you never know.

As for the houses, if they are based in SA, then they should get out of them. The "turn around" won't be enough in that market to make up for 9k negative cash flow.

I agree that they have an overall great situation going on. They have their debt working for them, and they're personally invested in their businesses. The also seem to be smart with their spending which is really the key here. It's easy to ring up a bunch of debt with that kind of income, but to be savings and spending like they do, that's what sets them apart.
